HOW TO GET YOUR CAR READY FOR SPRING

When the snow starts to melt, it’s time to get your car ready to roll with a spring touch-up. Some like to take their car to the mechanic for a spring tune-up, but there are plenty of things that you can do at home too. The experts at Turtle Wax have prepared this list of special touch-ups to help you shake winter off so you can learn how to get your car ready for spring.

STEP 1

Engine:

  • Check all your engine’s fluids to make sure that they are full. If you don’t know where all the fluid bottles are stored, your owner’s manual (or the internet) can help you locate them. Check each fluid bottle’s dipstick or fill line. These should all be tended to when you take your car in for service, but you can keep an eye on them in between, too. Most of these should last in between service appointments, but your windshield fluid will likely run out more frequently (especially if you live in a snowy area). Next, check the belts and hoses.
  • Pull on the belts to make sure they are not loose – if they are, have them checked at an auto shop. Gently squeeze the radiator hoses while the engine is warm (not hot). If the hose feels too soft, it may need replacing. Worn-out spark plugs can greatly reduce fuel efficiency. Check your spark plugs after winter and replace them if needed.

STEP 2

Exterior:

  • Check your windshield wiper blades. Typically, these are changed out in the spring.
  • Inspect your paint for any signs of rust, which should be treated immediately.
  • Check your tire pressure to make sure it meets the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Finish up with a wash to remove that winter grime and then apply a fresh wax. Now you and your car are ready to enjoy the warmth of spring.
