Wheels can be one of the most difficult parts of a car to keep clean. Grime from the road and hot brake dust take their toll, making wheels lose their luster quickly, but taking steps as soon as you notice signs of dullness will help preserve your wheels’ brilliant shine.
The most important thing to remember when shining your wheels is to make sure they’re cool to the touch. A cleaning or polishing product could discolor your wheels if applied when hot, so spray them down with a cool hose before you get started.
5 Step Process
1) Choose a product specially designed to clean and brighten your wheels.
Consult your owner’s manual for wheel care instructions and make sure you know the material your wheels are made from so that you choose the best cleaner to fit your needs. An employee at a tire or auto shop will be able to help you choose the right one. If you have chrome wheels, a product like Turtle Wax Platinum Chrome Wheel Cleaner is specifically formulated to get them clean without harming your chrome.
2) Clean your rims
You can’t have a great looking shine without first having great looking, clean rims. Pay special attention to the wells around the lug nuts, as they can trap and hold dirt. Clean rims with a detailing brush to really get into the tight spaces.
3) Dry off your wheels with a towel
Make sure that they’re totally clean.
4) Polish your wheels
Restoring shine is easy with a tire polish like Turtle Wax Chrome and Metal Polish. This polish will remove oxidation and leave a protective shine. Get some of the polish onto a clean, dry towel, about the size of the quarter. Focusing on one wheel at a time, rub the polish onto the wheel until it shines.
Repeat Step 4 for your other wheels.
