Wheels & tires can be one of the most difficult parts of a car to keep clean. Grime from the road and hot brake dust take their toll, making wheels lose their luster quickly, but taking steps as soon as you notice signs of dullness will help preserve that brilliant shine.
The most important thing to remember when shining your wheels and tires is to make sure they’re cool to the touch. A cleaning or polishing product could discolor your wheels if applied when hot, so spray them down with a cool stream of water before you get started.
5 Step Process to Clean & Shine Your Wheels
1. Choose a product specially designed to clean and brighten your wheels.
Consult your owner’s manual for wheel care instructions and make sure you know the material your wheels are made from such as aluminum or chrome so that you choose the best cleaner to fit your needs.
2. Clean your wheels
Your car should shine from top to bottom, so make sure your wheels are looking just as great as that freshly waxed paint. Pay special attention to the wells around the lug nuts, as they can trap and hold dirt. Clean wheels, one at a time, with a wheel cleaner. If you are unsure of the type of material your wheels are made of use Turtle Wax® All Wheel & Tire Cleaner, which is safe for all types of wheels. Spray wheel thoroughly and let product activate. For extremely dirty or intricate wheels, use a wheel brush. Rinse off wheels with cool water.
3. Dry off your wheels with a towel
Make sure that they are completely clean.
4. Polish your wheels
Restoring shine is easy with a tire polish like Turtle Wax® Renew Rx™ Premium All Metal Polish. This polish will remove oxidation and leave a protective shine. Apply a small amount of polish (about the size of a quarter) onto a clean, dry towel. Rub polish onto the wheel, one small area at a time, until black residue appears. Let dry to light haze and remove with a dry soft cloth, leaving a brilliant shine.
5. Repeat steps for remaining wheels
- There is nothing more satisfying than the finishing touch of deep, rich black tires. In order to achieve a luxurious shine on your tires, follow the steps below.
1. If you haven’t already cleaned your wheels & tires, follow the steps below.

For extremely dirty tires, agitate with a brush. Rinse off with water.
2. Shine your tires
After your tires are thoroughly cleaned and free of any leftover silicone, you can now apply tire shine. Using Turtle Wax® Jet Black™ Endura-Shine Tire Coat (included in the Turtle Wax® Jet Black™ Endura-Shine Tire Coat Kit). The advanced black-tinted acrylic technology covers the faded appearance of old and browning tires so they look their best. Use gloves (included in kit) while handling Black Endura-shine Tire Coat. Let dry for 10 minutes and then apply a second coat. To achieve a higher shine, additional coats may be layered.
3. Repeat steps for remaining tires
